Contest Winner: Win a RETURN TICKET simply because you love your mom!
If I Ain’t Got You
by Kelvin Kuan

She’s fun, she’s loving, she’s ever willing, she’s smart, she’s hardworking and she’s…plump…no, not really. If she reads this, I’ll probably be grounded for life. Just by that statement alone, you do know she’s fierce right? No kidding.
Honestly, I’ve never met anyone more inspiring. She’s perhaps the first. I’m not saying so because the special day is around the corner but because I think she’s so inspiring that “inspiring” cannot do just to it.
Recently, she fractured her ankle in church. I laughed at her for being clumsy but I secretly sighed because she’s hurt. Seeing her in and out of the hospital but still maintaining a cheerful spirit is what makes me so amazed. There isn’t a single complaint. I guess I inherited this part of her genes. People ask if I’m ever tired of smiling, and the same goes to her. But I can assure you, both of us will answer, “No!”. It’s like if smiling is a career, we would make the best employees ever.
Because she’s can’t drive, I’ve been spending a whole chunk of time with her this couple of days, running errands for her. From the first day itself, I began to be annoyed because there’s so much running around, turning on and off the engine, walking in and out…you get the picture. But this also shows me one thing – how hard her job is.
She juggles between her business and home. Like what Betty (America Ferrera) says, “You are an attractive, intelligent, confident business woman”. To your surprise, her name is Betty too. I don’t know how she does it, but it seems so effortless. If it were to be me, I’ll probably die of tiredness…and I’m always complaining that I’m tired…it’s just incomparable.
I grew up learning a lot from her. She doesn’t only teach but nurtures. She educates and she scolds. True, there are times when I was annoyed by her constant nags and failure to understand technology, but hey, which mum doesn’t go through that? I also often annoy her, with my impatience and stupidity. We torture one another but we also crack one another. I think that’s a healthy relationship.
She’s our handyman, she’s our go-getter and she’s our pillar. I have no idea what I would be today without her. I hope she doesn’t read this because I’m secretly a fan of hers but to keep my ego, I’m gonna pretend I’m not. Shh! I’d like to post her picture but she’s quite against it. She’s way more than a celebrity than me. Haha!
This Mothers’ Day, I’m gonna learn how to appreciate her more, how to love her more and how to respect her more. At the risk of sounding really annoying but I’ll still say it, “Mom, I love you!”. Have I not answered the question? My mum is the best because SHE’S JUST THE BEST!
