Happy 24th Birthday to me
Midnight came. There was no SMSes – Reminded me of last year. My mobile phone didn’t buzz a bit; not before the clock strikes 12, not after the clock strikes 12, not many hours after that. I was starting to think that this would be a culture for the many birthdays to come. It has something to do with aging; the older we get, the more people forget, and the lesser birthdays we celebrate. It’s one thing to be forgotten, yet another to feel forgotten.
That’s when Facebook comes to the rescue. A simple reminder to all your friends and they will flood your profile page with overflowing birthday wishes, you’ll begin to lose count. It’s hardly judge-able if people remember by heart, or by the little panel that blinks nonstop on their Facebook homepage. It’s just absurb that someone from primary school even wished me ‘Happy Birthday’ when we hardly spoken a word to each other since the last decade.
As the day came to an end, someone said, “Well, at least people flooded your Facebook with wishes. I had none on my birthday.” Now that just made me smile because she was right – At least people made the effort to say something (virtually). At the end of the day, it’s not how people remember; it’s whether they even want to remember in the first place.
