Tutorial: How to Sign Up for Twitter

Submitted by on October 2, 2009 – 02:45One Comment

twitterRecently, I have been working hard with fellow RunNat Committee members to come out with a solution on how to keep everyone in the nation updated with information of how each Running Team is performing at their own place and time on the day of the event. A live web telecast is something I am not familiar with and would require a lot of resources; thus that option was dropped. Then I suggested using Twitter as the channel to achieve this objective. It’s FREE for everyone to use and people can get updates in their email inbox, mobile phone, GPS services, etc. Runners can even get status updates while they are running in different parts of the country and update others through the same way. Anyway, I called this exercise LIVEtweet.

After introducing LIVEtweet to everyone in the team, I was utterly surprised when they told me to come out with a Twitter for Dummies guide for all of them. I wasn’t the first one to jump into Twitter when it first started in 2006 (I only signed up this year). I sure thought that everyone should know what Twitter is by now. Anyway, for those of you who don’t and need a hand through the sign-up process, here’s a quick tutorial on How to Sign Up for Twitter.

Step 1: Log on to www.twitter.com and you should arrive at the site page above. Click on the SIGN UP NOW button, which is bright lime green in colour.

Step 2: You will then appear on this page. Key in your details as accurately as possible. Choose your username wisely as it would be included as part of the url of your new Twitter homepage.

Step 3: As you key in your details, the right portion of the form requirements will react to your information. It will let you know if the username you have chosen is available, if your password is weak or strong, and if your email is valid for registration. Click CREATE MY ACCOUNT at the bottom of the form when you are ready to proceed.

Step 4: The next page that appears on your browser should be the above. This page enquires your email details to access to your contact book. This is not a compulsory step. You may click SKIP THIS STEP at the bottom of the page.

Step 5: The next page you will land on is the page that suggests some people you may want to follow. In Twitter, following someone means subscribing to their status updates. This is also not a compulsory step. You may click SKIP THIS STEP to move on to the next step.

Step 6: Tadaa! You have just signed up for a Twitter account. It’s so easy. Here’s how you can follow someone. See the SEARCH tool on the right sidebar? Type in the name of the person you want to find – for example, Cmate86.

Step 7: Twitter will then present you the search result of the name or keyword which you have search. Just click on the name which you want to follow and you will appear on their Twitter homepage.

Step 8: You will see a FOLLOW button on the user’s Twitter homepage which you are currently visiting. If you would like to follow that someone, just click on FOLLOW and you have just subscribe to their Twitter updates.

Step 9: Click on HOME at the menu bar on the top of the website to return to your own Twitter homepage. As you have yet to update your Twitter status, the site page should appear like above. Key in your status at the WHAT ARE YOU DOING column and press ENTER.

Step 10: Your status has been updated. Just log in to Twitter every time you need to update your status or have a short simple message to say to your followers. You are now, officially, a Twitter user!
