Love VS Sayang

Submitted by on August 18, 2009 – 21:022 Comments

The first thing that came through my mind at the thought of the differences between love and sayang is this: love means cinta, and sayang means feel affection for. In my mind, I see love and sayang as two different things. But how exactly are they different, this I cannot define. It is almost unexplainable but as I began to allow these two words to linger in my mind for the next few days, I could almost feel the vast difference between them.

One has said that love is a way of experiencing the divinity that lies within us all through another person. Another has said that love is a spiritual experience given to us by the pure existence of the one we love. And yet, another has said that love is wanting to take away all that would bring his loved ones pain or regret. All these sayings are not wrong, but I personally believe that there is much more to the true meaning of love than all that have been mentioned. Love is simply too abstract to be defined by merely a sentence. Even a person whom has experienced love could not define love as it truly is.

Nevertheless, if I were asked to define what love it, I’ll define love as an intense indescribable desire feeling of attraction towards a person, a deep emotional attachment for someone, and an enthusiastic feeling of affection towards the person. Love is wanting to share everything of your life with your loved ones, and wanting them to share everything of theirs with you. It doesn’t matter if there is lack of understanding between both people, it doesn’t matter if there are faults or conflicts in the bond shared, because love overwhelms all that matters and make everything seems perfect (somehow) because love is the greatest feeling one could ever experienced.

Composer of The Magic Paintbrush, Dr. Kenneth Lyen, said this, “In Malay, sayang can mean love, darling, or pity. As the love story unfolds, it can be any of these three meanings.” I personally think that sayang is an expression of one’s love for another, a language for love. Sayang is what we do to demonstrate our love to our loved ones. It is more of an action than a feeling. It is the action of displaying the love we have for someone. It is what we do for a person, with thoughts of him/her in mind, to show the deep care and concern we have for that loved person. It is showing our affection though our gestures and motions.

Looking at the usage of these words by the Malay people, the word cinta (love) is termed as a much deeper passionate feeling than sayang, in which, the phrase “Aku cinta padamu” brings a deeper sense of fondness and adoration compared to the phrase “Aku sayang padamu”. With this, I would conclude that, sayang is only an expression of love. You can love or sayang someone. But when you sayang someone, it does not really mean that you love him/her. Even so, when you love someone, sayang is actually included in that love you have for him/her.
