Movie Review: Selamanya

Submitted by on May 16, 2009 – 17:33No Comment

Julie Estelle evokes a different emotion in this movie. Maybe it’s because she has the foreign look of a France lady that causes Selamanya to be less Indonesian-typical. Or maybe it’s her convincing acting skills that brought out the essence of a person’s soul.

In Selamanya, Julie plays the role of a young lady by the name of Aristha. She leads an adventurous life of selling and taking drugs herself, running away from hooligans who chase her for the heavy debts she owes them, avoiding her mother because of her guilt and using her body to pay for drugs. In short, her life is upside down and she doesn’t mind it a bit. Not until her ex-boyfriend walks into her life one day and burns in her – hope – the desire to turn over a new leaf.

Starring Dimas Seto (the handsome upcoming Indonesian actor), her ex-boyfriend suffers from confusion between his fiancee and ex-girlfriend. On the other hand, she slowly finds herself putting her trust in him even though he has broken it once in the past. She trusts him so much that she places her life in his hands. And it’s in these very hands that she receives healing and once again becomes a clean person. She no longer needs drugs.

I watched this movie without prior research. I have no idea what the storyline is about, who the main characters are or where the story is set. I just liked the title. Selamanya means Forever. It sure sounds like a sweet romance title. Only it isn’t. In my opinion, Selamanya is wrongly titled. The love story is overshadowed by the theme: Drugs. For this, I am disappointed.

P/s: The acting skills of the actors and actresses were good though.
